Terms of Service

Last updated: July 21, 2026

1. Acceptance of Terms

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and ReadUp ("ReadUp," "we," "us," or "our"). By downloading, accessing, purchasing, or using ReadUp : Earn your Screen Time, including the iOS app, website, catalog, and related services (collectively, the "Service"), you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to the iOS app. If these Terms conflict with that agreement, the terms that provide the applicable mandatory rights or protections will control.

2. Description of the Service

ReadUp lets you choose apps, categories, or websites to shield, set an active-reading goal, read supported books, and earn a fixed unlock session after meeting the goal. The Service also tracks local reading progress and offers a downloadable book catalog.

ReadUp may change, suspend, or discontinue parts of the Service as the product develops.

3. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use ReadUp. If you are not old enough to enter into these Terms where you live, you may use ReadUp only with consent from a parent or legal guardian.

4. App Access and Screen Time Controls

ReadUp relies on Apple Screen Time frameworks to shield the apps, categories, or websites you select. Apple controls these operating-system features, and availability may vary by device, operating-system version, authorization, settings, or Apple policy.

ReadUp is designed to fail open for subscription, reading-tracking, content, or Screen Time errors, so an error should not intentionally leave your selections locked. A quiet emergency bypass is also available through the shield interface. Even so, ReadUp does not guarantee that shielding, unlocking, relocking, usage thresholds, or the bypass will always work without interruption.

Do not rely on ReadUp to control access where failure could cause harm, prevent emergency communication, or create a safety, health, legal, employment, or security risk. You remain responsible for your device, Screen Time settings, and access to essential apps and services.

5. Reading Activity and Progress

Unlock eligibility is based primarily on active reading time. Page or location progress, inactivity checks, and other reading signals may support the reading-time requirement and reduce obvious misuse.

ReadUp may pause active-time credit when reading activity appears inactive. Metrics and estimates, including pages read or scrolling time replaced, may be approximate. You are responsible for choosing goals and unlock settings that fit your needs.

6. Books and Catalog Content

ReadUp offers public-domain or otherwise licensed editions and related assets. Copyright status can depend on the exact edition, its contributors, and your country. Availability may therefore differ by region and change, and we may remove or restrict content without notice when rights are uncertain or challenged.

The Service gives you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to access catalog content through ReadUp, subject to any rights notice supplied with it. These Terms do not limit rights you independently have in public-domain material or under applicable law. If you believe catalog content infringes rights, contact [email protected] with the work, edition, country, and basis for your concern.

7. Subscriptions and Purchases

ReadUp currently offers weekly and yearly auto-renewable subscriptions through the Apple App Store. The yearly plan may include a three-day introductory free trial for eligible users. The exact price, currency, billing period, trial eligibility, and included features shown in the app and Apple's purchase sheet at the time of purchase control.

Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm a purchase. A subscription renews automatically for the same period unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the end of the current period or trial. Apple may charge for renewal within 24 hours before the current period ends. When a trial ends, the selected paid subscription begins unless cancelled in time. Trials may be limited to one per subscription group or user.

You can manage or cancel a subscription in your Apple Account subscription settings and restore eligible purchases in ReadUp. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Apple handles billing and refund requests under its rules. Temporary purchase, entitlement, or network errors may cause ReadUp to allow access while the error is resolved; this does not cancel or change an active subscription.

8. Acceptable Use

You agree not to misuse ReadUp. You may not:

9. Privacy

Your use of ReadUp is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which explains how information is handled.

10. Intellectual Property and App License

ReadUp's software, design, branding, and original content are owned by ReadUp or its licensors. Subject to these Terms and the App Store usage rules, we grant you a limited, revocable, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the app on Apple-branded devices you own or control. No ownership is transferred to you. Third-party and open-source components remain subject to their own licenses.

11. No Professional Advice

ReadUp is a productivity and reading tool. It is not medical, psychological, educational, legal, or financial advice. You are responsible for decisions you make based on your use of the Service.

12. Disclaimer

To the maximum extent permitted by law, ReadUp is provided "as is" and "as available." We do not warrant that the Service, catalog, progress estimates, subscription access, or Screen Time controls will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, accurate, or available in every location or on every device. Nothing in these Terms excludes warranties or consumer rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.

13. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, ReadUp and its providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, lost access, or business interruption arising from the Service. This limitation does not apply to liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including any liability for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence where applicable law so provides.

14. Suspension and Termination

You may stop using ReadUp at any time. We may suspend or terminate access to the Service if you materially violate these Terms, create legal or security risk, or if we discontinue the Service. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination will survive, including ownership, disclaimers, and liability limitations. Ending use or access does not itself cancel an App Store subscription.

15. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms as the Service or law changes. We will update the date above and provide any additional notice required by law. Material changes apply prospectively from their stated effective date, and we will request consent where required.

16. General

If any provision is unenforceable, it will be limited or removed only to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will continue. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a reorganization, financing, merger, sale, or transfer of the Service. These Terms, the Privacy Policy, and the applicable Apple terms form the agreement concerning the Service, without limiting mandatory consumer rights.
